Varsity Sports Wrap Up 2010-11

‘Iolani student athletes in all levels and divisions ended another fulfilling year in a variety of sports. Here are the end-of-season results for varsity teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and at the state level.

Fall

Golfers Finish Successful Season



Marissa Chow ’12 was named 2011 Player of the Year.
‘Iolani golf teams had another successful season. The girls intermediate team won the ILH championship for the second year in a row. At the varsity level,  the girls were led by 2011 ILH Player of the Year Marissa Chow ’12. Her season average was 72.4 strokes and she finished second in the state tournament. She also won the ILH Individual Golf Championship for girls.



Lorens Chan ’12 was named 2011 ILH Player of the Year.
The boys were led by 2011 ILH Player of the Year Lorens Chan ’12.  Chan had a season stroke average of 68.2 and won the state title for the second time. Also, riding on Chan’s performance, the boys took second place in the team competition, just one stroke behind Punahou. It was the second year in a row that the boys finished second.  
At the ILH Individual Golf Championship, Reo Saito ’11 charged into third place by shooting a second round 4 under par 68. That combined with a first round score 74 at Oahu Country Club was good enough for third place. Other ‘Iolani team members winning championship medals were Reese Suzuki ’13  and Trey Kidd ’13.

Olympic Judo Coach Demonstrates

Olympic Judo Coach Todd Brehe visited ‘Iolani’s judo team and shared techniques and training with students from late February until early March. There are more than 50 students in ‘Iolani’s judo program.

Tennis Championships



Bobbi Oshiro ’12 and Kristen Poei ’13 are congratulated by co-athletic director Eddie Maruyama at the ILH tennis championship tournament.
‘Iolani was well represented at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu tennis championships held at Central Oahu Regional Park. Raiders dominated the girls singles competition as Bobbi Oshiro ’12 edged teammate Kristen Poei ’13 in the finals. On the boys side, the ‘Iolani doubles team of Marco de Lannoy Kobayashi ’11 and Darin Poei ’12 finished as runners-up to a duo from Kamehameha Schools.


College Bound

Reo Saito ’11 on April 20 in the Headmaster’s Office signed a national letter of intent for a golf scholarship with California State University - East Bay. Saito’s parents and coach Glenn Inouye ’69 were present along with ‘Iolani administrators, teachers, friends and fans.

Alumni Association Golf Tournament

The ‘Iolani Alumni Association held its annual golf tournament on May 12 at the Hawai‘i Prince Golf Club. The Class of 1980 organized this year’s event which included fun on the course followed by a reception and brief program. Thanks goes to all golfers and alumni who participated and made this year’s tourney another success.


The Class of ’80 golf committee made sure the tournament flowed smoothly.

Friends in the Class of ’90 reunited.
