Celebrating the Class of 2009: Reflections on Graduation Day

The commencement ceremony for ‘Iolani School’s Class of 2009 marked both the closing of a cherished chapter and the opening of a new journey in the lives of 237 graduates. Held on June 6 in the heart of campus, the event brought together family, friends, teachers, and supporters to witness this momentous occasion.

A Day of Tradition and Inspiration

The ceremony began with an invocation led by The Rev. Daniel L. Leatherman, followed by a heartfelt address from senior class president Rance Fujiwara ’09. Valedictorians Robert Tamai ’09 and Julia Zhang ’09 spoke on behalf of their fellow Scholarship Medal recipients, sharing reflections on growth, friendship, and the shared experiences that defined their ‘Iolani years.

Honoring the enduring bonds of the ‘Iolani community, members of the Class of 1959 returned to campus, celebrated by Headmaster Dr. Val Iwashita ’67 for marking 50 years since their own graduation. This poignant moment highlighted the continuity, fellowship, and lasting impact of an Iolani education.
