I’ve always been drawn to people who combine talent with humility. Watching Derrick Low ’04, I realized how rare that combination is.
From Raider to Global Player
Derrick’s basketball journey started at ‘Iolani, where he became a four-time All-State Player and three-time All-State Player of the Year. I imagine the gyms filled with energy whenever he played. He moved on to Washington State University as a four-year starter, then took his skills overseas, playing professionally in France, Australia, and Lithuania. Today, he competes with Maccabi Haifa in Israel’s Super League.
It’s easy to focus on the stats and teams. But I’m more interested in the person behind them—the dedication, the long hours of practice, the constant learning.
Humility and Giving Back
Even with all his success, Derrick remains grounded. He often credits ‘Iolani for opening doors that might never have existed otherwise. This past summer, he returned to lead a basketball clinic for boys and girls in the community.
Seeing him work alongside former and current Raider teammates, I noticed something important: mentorship can be just as exciting as the game itself. Watching kids’ faces light up with each tip, each demonstration, reminded me that leadership is quiet but powerful.
“I really appreciate all that has been possible,” Derrick said.
It’s that sense of gratitude that stays with me. The slam dunks are impressive, yes—but the moments of generosity, teaching, and encouragement are what truly inspire.
A Small Discovery
What I took away from spending time with Derrick is simple: talent may open doors, but humility and giving back open hearts. That, I think, is the real victory.
